THE BEAVER MONOLOGUES
"THANK YOU FOR LISTENING TO MY STORY AND MY EXPERIENCES WHEN NO ONE ELSE WOULD LISTEN"
OUR STORY
The Beaver Monologues is a student-led project dedicated to giving a voice to the Bluffton community.
In the Spring of 2015, Rebecca Juliana directed Bluffton University's first performance of Eve Ensler's The Vagina Monologues. This production sparked the idea for the first ever “Beaver Monologues” presented in Spring of 2016.
This production focused on the experiences of women in our community. In the combined interest of social work and theater, Rebecca collected anonymous submissions from the Bluffton community, both on and off campus. These submissions discussed the real and sometimes difficult topics regarding experiences of being a woman, oppression, and of gender awareness.
The hard work and passion Rebecca put into this project successfully started conversations on Bluffton University’s campus. Brave women from all over the community opened up and proudly told their stories. The production provided a safe and supportive space to the stories performed, giving a voice to those unable to speak their stories.
In the Spring of 2017, Justina Fuqua with a team of other students carried out Rebecca’s project with the same goal in mind; to discuss these topics openly and advocate for women’s rights and gender equality on campus.
In the Spring of 2018, Justina continued this project and demonstrated the importance of a ‘living’ production. If the performance is to bring together a community, it must move and develop with the community it is representing. The 2018 Beaver Monologues was the first to open auditions to non-binary identifying people and men. The mission of The Beaver Monologues is to create dialogue, which is difficult to do with one perspective. We are striving to continue adding perspectives for a more inclusive dialogue.
The Beaver Monologues will remain an anonymous submission performance. We are looking for stories from all members of our community- all students, staff, those in our community, and alumni, all genders and identities, all ages- to share part of their life experience with us, something that has shaped you into who you are. These stories can be inspirational, heartbreaking, serious, or funny—something that represents you and your life experience.
